Cord Blood Forum – Cord Blood Transplant Updates

There are many diseases that are now treatable and/or curable by replacing the patient’s blood and bone marrow systems with umbilical cord blood. This is called a hematopoietic transplant because the cord blood is infused into the patient's blood system.  This is essentially the same process as a bone marrow transplant but uses cord blood instead.  (both bone marrow and cord blood are rich sources of stem cells).  This list contains the various diseases that have been successfully treated and/or cured through cord blood transplants. Click Here.  This list is growing everyday to include genetic and degenerative disorders besides the traditionally treated blood and bone marrow cancers.

Here is a list of domestic and international transplant centers. Click Here. Many of these centers do not offer cord blood transplants and many offer them only to children, so please inquire with the transplant center closest to you for more information about specific cord blood treatments.

Newsflash: Latest Curable Disease

There are also many diseases which are “treatable” with cord blood.  These illnesses are not necessarily “cured” with a transplant but are treated with cord blood infusions that repair and replace damaged tissues and lower the severity of symptoms, actually helping afflicted organs to heal.  Trials and treatments are now being done for heart disease, diabetes, cerebral palsy, autism, and degenerative disorders such as MS and ALS (Lou Gherig's disease).
